I can only speek from my self every one prefer there own methods.
I wash the figure in soap end then use a primer Vallejo Acrylic Polyurethane - Primer Grey 200ml something like that.
The wash is for the colour to STICK more and remov chemicals from casting.
I then ley a coat of primer natural a light colour, in this stage you can check for flaws.
The primer makes the paint move out better and make the colour stick.

then i start with the face with oil colours
I like oils the best cause it' easy to work with and to give nice shades and lights.
The finishing step in face is to paint the eays and eaybrown it' probably easiest to wait for the face colour to dry.

The artist oil colour dry between 12hours - 2-days

The Vallejo Model Colour paint's is pretty good they dry fast and can be diluted with water
And airbrushed, i use them for the detail or enamels the orginal hobby paint.

If you dont use a primer it can be good to paint out the ground colours specialy if you paint with oils otherwise
The base like metal figur will stand out.

Last on the figure when dried you can use pigments brushed with a big flat brush
To give a dusty look, or use withe pigment on clothes.

Figures that are in skin color whit out flaws
    like these http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=206
You can give a wash with turpentine and brown and then paint high lights whit light skin color.

Also metal figures with out flaws you can paint the helmets this way and chain mail to.

Last bit putt your figure infront off a mirror check for flaws and errors

Well i can go on and on it's best to experiment self

Forum post by Jager. Topic: Slingers

Yea that would be a good idea for a valdemar set some slingers!
But it almost posible to use the ancient set straight out of box, cause the changes over time is not big

    For example the alexanders infantry

    http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=465

with some conversion, but the pose seams good to me and a good kit to. 24mm they are.

Or this one german knights but 1500s http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1069

Or you could use the falling knight series from valdemar but i think you used them and i am not shure how he got killed?
